Flute & Piccolo Tuition
I am an enthusiastic and experienced flute teacher who encourages an appreciation and love of music.
My teaching approach is a holistic one that promotes musicianship and a musical experience, alongside solid technique and key skills. I encourage creativity and critical thinking through interpretation, improvisation and self-assessment. I believe considering the expressive aspects of performance can be introduced at an early stage, keeping a musical focus without hindering a student’s examination goals.
Through private lessons and teaching for music schools and hubs, I have taught students of all ages and abilities from beginner to grade 8. I aim develop individuals as performers while working with their own goals and aspirations, whether this is solo or group performances, music grade examinations, 11-plus tests or simply personal fulfilment. In my one to one lessons students play independently and learn to make informed, musical decisions, in addition to duets and musicianship activities.
Outreach work and increasing accessibility in music is an area very close to my heart. I have taught for an Every Child A Musician Scheme, running flute and clarinet classes in under-resourced schools. Through my studies at Trinity Laban conservatoire, I have specialised in instrumental teaching and creative education modules which provided an introduction to the approaches of educators such as Kodály and Dalcroze. I led workshops introducing classical music and creating group compositions. Furthermore, my volunteering with the college’s outreach department allowed me to learn from fantastic animateurs, composers and musicians on many youth projects. The most memorable projects aimed to support young people living in challenging circumstances to progress in their music making outside of the school environment.
I believe my students benefit from my passion and years of performance experience. Music should be a conversation in order for lessons to be tailored to individual students and for there to be meaningful engagement from both sides if students are to reap the many benefits of learning to play a musical instrument.
Please get in touch to arrange lessons or discuss an approach to help your musical progression.
I am currently available for short term projects and online lessons for one-off guidance or small blocks of lessons.
Jessamy MMus, BMus(Hons)
It is obvious with Jessamy that she loves, lives and breathes the flute.Tim M, adult student
All you have to do is listen to her play to be both inspired and motivated. It is also so nice to have a teacher who plays with such a beautiful sound so as to be able to try to model ones own sound too during lessons…
… every time a lesson with her has ended I always find I am already looking forward to the next one and trying to put what she has taught me into practice.
